Pregnancy and childbirth
Pregnancy and childbirth is a unique and powerful experience that involves enormous physical, hormonal and emotional changes during a short period of time. The body must adapt to carry more weight, which is an extra physical effort for all organs and tissues.
During and after pregnancy, an osteopathic treatment can improve the inconvenience and physical pain, it prepares the body for childbirth and helps the mother to recover after childbirth.
Pregnancy headaches are common during pregnancy as the shape of the body changes and the size and weight of the uterus too. This implies major changes in posture due to the alteration of the centre of gravity of the body; adaptation to these changes may be difficult if there have previously existed back problems, or tensions from accident or trauma.
The tissues gain on laxity during pregnancy due to the action of hormones. This allows a better opening to the bones of the pelvis to ease the baby’s head to pass through the birth canal. Unfortunately, this ligamentous laxity affects the entire body and makes it more vulnerable during pregnancy.
Changes due to the expansion of the uterus often are accompanied by symptoms such as nausea, heartburn and difficulty breathing.
Osteopathic treatment can help the body to better adapt to this process of change and make pregnancy more comfortable.
